
(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball team needed solid pitching, defense and timely hitting if they wanted to open the 2008 season on a high note. The Golden Eagles got all three as they swept a non-conference doubleheader from Northland College of Ashland, Wis. at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. last Thursday night. U of M, Crookston took game one by a 4-0 score and won the nightcap 13-4.
Game One
Paul Krebs (Jr, RHP/C, Little Falls, Minn.) threw a complete game shut-out as the Golden Eagles downed the Lumberjacks 4-0. He struck out 11 batters while only surrendering three hits and walking two. U of M, Crookston scored a run in the second and added two in the fourth and one in the sixth. Kayle Lewellen (Jr, 2B, Forest Lake, Minn.) had a run batted in (RBI) for the Golden Eagles.
Game Two
U of M, Crookston blew open the game with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning and went on to win 13-4. Lewellen was 2 for 4 with three RBI. He had a solo homerun and a triple. Alex Gregor (Fr, 1B, Shakopee, Minn.) was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Reiner (Jr, C/RHP, Sanborn, Minn.) was 2 for 4 with an RBI, a triple and two runs scored. Jordan Triestram (So, SS/RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) added a single and three RBI as well as two runs scored. Shawn Motl (So, 3B/RHP, Staples, Minn.) was 2 for 4 with two RBI. David Lovly (Jr, OF, Goodridge, Minn.) was 2 for 4 while Nate Stark (Jr, OF, McIntosh, Minn.) added an RBI single. Nick Wright (So, RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) was stellar in relief going 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two and walking two to get the win.
U of M, Crookston improves to 2-0 on the season while Northland College falls to 0-2. The Golden Eagles will return to action on Thursday, March 6 when they take on the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a non-conference doubleheader at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:00 am.
