Golden Eagle Softball Continues Consistent Play in Sweep of Crown College

(Rosemount, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Softball team traveled to Rosemount, Minn. to play Crown College in the Irish Dome on Tuesday, March 18. The Golden Eagles continued to hit well and took advantage of miscues by the young Crown team to earn two non-conference victories 11-0 and 38-3.
Katie Bowar (Fr, 1B, Moorhead, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively in the double-header going 4-5 (.800) at the plate with one double, one walk, three hit-by-pitches, six runs scored and seven RBI. Megan Derouard (Sr, SS, Kenora, Ontario) added to her senior season stats going 4-6 (.667) with two doubles and a homerun. She scored seven times, drove in seven Golden Eagle base runners and finished with a 1.667 slugging percentage.
Pitchers for the Golden Eagles continue to keep the ball low in the zone and challenge opposing hitters. Steph Thomas (Fr, P, St. Albert, Alberta) and Britney Winkelman (Jr, P, Foley, MN) each threw five innings in the sweep of Crown College. Thomas gave up one hit and no runs while striking out 11 Crown hitters. Winkelman gave up three runs (two earned) and struck out eight hitters.
Sarena Diederichs (Fr, C, St. Cloud, Minn.) continues to lead the Golden Eagle offensively this season. She is batting .600 (12-20) in six games. She has scored 10 times, hit two doubles and has driven in 10 RBI. She has a .700 slugging percentage and a .667 on base percentage. Defensively, Diederichs has 16 putouts, four assists and has a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000.
The Golden Eagles are now 4-2 overall on the season while Crown College drops to 0-2. The team returns to the field on Saturday, March 29 against Morningside College at the Morningside Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. First pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
