
(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball team exploded for 18 runs on 19 hits to defeat Bemidji State University 18-16 in the nightcap of their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) doubleheader Thursday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. The Beavers took game one by a 7-1 score.
Game One
Bemidji State University opened up a six run lead after four innings and held on for a 7-1 victory. Justin Huether, Brian Simon and Shaun Corbett each had two hits. Corbett added two runs batted in (RBI) as did Tony Samuelson. Matt Fossen scattered three hits over six innings to get the victory. He struck out six and walked three. Nick Wright (So, RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) took the loss for the Golden Eagles. He scattered six runs (five earned) on seven hits. He struck out five and walked three.
Game Two
The Golden Eagles and the Beavers combined for 34 runs on 36 hits. However, it was U of M, Crookston who had the final say taking home the 18-16 victory. The Golden Eagles opened up a 7-0 lead after half an inning. The Beavers countered with five runs to make the score 7-5 after one inning. U of M, Crookston widened their lead to 11-5 with four runs in the top half of the second. Bemidji State University countered with a run in their half and added two runs in the bottom half of the third to close the gap to 11-8. The Beavers exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a 16-11 lead. However, the Golden Eagles countered with seven runs in the top of the sixth to secure the 18-16 victory.
Paul Krebs (Jr, RHP/C, Little Falls, Minn.) was 3 for 5 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Shawn Motl (So, 3B/RHP, Staples, Minn.) was 3 for 5 with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored and an RBI. Tyler Reiner (Jr, C, Sanborn, Minn.) was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. David Lovly (Jr, OF, Goodridge, Minn.) was 2 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and five RBI. Kayle Lewellen (Jr, IF, Forest Lake, Minn.) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Alex Gregor (So., 1B/RHP, Shakopee, Minn.) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jake Poehler (Fr, OF, Coon Rapids, Minn.) was 2 for 3 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBI. Matt Morin (Sr, OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.) was one for five with a two-run homerun. Beau Mertens (Sr, 1B/RHP, Motley, Minn.) was 1 for 2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Gregor threw 2.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. He gave up one run on two hits while striking out three and walking two.
The Golden Eagles improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC. The Beavers fall to 3-9 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC. The two teams will close out the inaugural NSIC/LJK Metrodome Classic with a doubleheader Friday, March 21. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 pm at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
