Golden Eagle Baseball Squad Drops Four Games to 28th Ranked Wayne State College

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball team traveled to Wayne, Neb. on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 for four Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games. The games were originally scheduled for Crookston, Minn. However, they were moved to Wayne due to inclement weather and the Golden Eagles served as the home team. Wayne State College (ranked 28th in NCAA Division II) swept the series but there were positives for the Golden Eagles.

Wayne State College scored 11 runs in the final three innings of game one to break open an 8-4 game and take a 19-4 victory.  Paul Krebs (Jr, RHP/C, Little Falls, Minn.) was 3 for 4 while Tyler Reiner (Jr, C/RHP, Sanborn, Minn.) was 2 for 3 for U of M, Crookston. Matt Morin (Sr, OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.) added a three-run homerun.

 

In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles threw a major scare into the 28th ranked Wildcats as the game was tied 10-10 going into the seventh inning. However, Wayne State scored eight runs in the top half of the inning to secure the 18-10 victory. Jake Poehler (Fr, OF, Coon Rapids, Minn.) had a triple and two runs batted in (RBI). Reiner had a double and two RBI while Morin was 2 for 4 and two RBI.

The Wildcats scored in every inning except the fifth and the seventh to gain the 14-3 victory in game one. Krebs was 2 for 3 while Kayle Lewellen added two hits including a two-run homerun. Laudyn Nelson (Jr, RHP/IF, Middle River, Minn.) was solid in relief throwing three innings while allowing one run on two hits. He struck out one and did not walk anyone.

 

The nightcap saw the U of M, Crookston trail just 6-3 going into the sixth before Wayne State scored three runs to take the 9-3 victory. Adam Lee (Fr, 2B, Halstad, Minn.) and David Lovly (Jr, OF, Goodridge, Minn.) each had two hits. Lee added a double. Lowell Hanson (Fr, LHP, Two Harbors, Minn.) was solid in relief throwing four innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three and walking none. Hanson held the Wildcats scoreless in three of the four innings that he threw.

 

U of M, Crookston drops to 3-13 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC. Wayne State improves to 22-6 overall and 8-2 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, April 9 when they travel to Moorhead, Minn. to take on Concordia-Moorhead in a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
