Dragon Softball Sneaks Two Wins Past Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Softball team played its best softball of the season against the MSU Moorhead Dragons at the UMC Softball Field on Wednesday, April 9. The Golden Eagles battled for 15 innings but in the end, it was the Dragons coming out on top 4-2 and 6-3 (8-innings).

 

Game 1: The Dragons opened game one taking advantage of Golden Eagle miscues. Three base hits, one walk and one error cost the Golden Eagles three runs (one earned) and put UMC down 3-0 early. Minnesota, Crookston added a run in the fifth inning when Lorelei McGee (Jr, OF, Moose Lake, Minn.) walked and was driven in on a double by Tracy Nyhus (Jr, 2B, Almena, Wis.). The Dragons added a run in the sixth after MSUM leadoff hitter Casey Lindseth hit a triple and was driven in by Mandy Adolph. UMC added a run in the sixth as well when Amy Burke (So, OF, Crookston, Minn.) singled and was driven in on a Shawna Steinbrink (Jr, 3B, Crookston, Minn.) double. MSU Moorhead shut down the Golden Eagles in the seventh to take the 4-2 NSIC victory.

 

Game 2: MSU Moorhead used two long balls in the night cap to defeat the Golden Eagles 6-3. In the fourth inning, Kari Sagehorn walked, Lacey Bunkelman singled and Julie Vancura finished off the rally with a three-run homerun to take a 3-0 lead. The Golden Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Burke reached on an error, Kayla Bowar (Fr, OF/IF, Moorhead, Minn.) singled and Katie Bowar (Fr, 1B, Moorhead, Minn.) singled to score Burke and Sarena Diederichs (Fr, C/OF, St. Cloud, Minn.) singled to score Bowar. UMC tied the game in the seventh when Katie Bowar walked and stole second base. Megan Derouard (Sr, SS, Kenora, Ontario) hit a clutch single to score Bowar and tie the game 3-3. The Dragons finished the game in the top of the eighth inning when Kari Sagehorn singled, Lacey Bunkelman walked and Casey Preston sealed the MSUM win with a three-run home run to take the victory 6-3.

 

Player Spotlight: Tracy Nyhus went 2-5 (.400) at the plate against MSU Moorhead. She tallied one double, one RBI and had a slugging percentage of .600.

 

The Golden Eagles are 6-9 overall and 0-7 in NSIC play. Minnesota, Crookston hosts the University of North Dakota today. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
