Upper Iowa Sweeps Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.) – Upper Iowa University opened up a 3-0 lead after one inning of play and went on to defeat the University of Minnesota, Crookston 13-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play today in Fayette, Iowa. The Peacocks also took the night-cap by a 7-3 score.
Game One
Upper Iowa scored in every inning to win 13-0. Nick Fjelland was 2 for 4 with 4 runs batted in (RBI). Brian Solemaas threw a two-hit shut-out. Jake Poehler (Fr, OF, Coon Rapids, Minn.) was 2 for 3 for the Golden Eagles recording U of M, Crookston’s lone two hits.
Game Two
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead but the Peacocks had the final say as they won 7-3 despite being outhit 12-7. Kayle Lewellen (Jr, IF, Forest Lake, Minn.) was 4 for 4 with two runs scored. Poehler added three more hits and a run scored. Beau Mertens (Sr, RHP/1B, Motley, Minn.) was solid on the hill throwing 4.2 innings while allowing four runs on four hits and striking out three.
U of M, Crookston falls to 3-16 overall and 1-11 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa improves to 13-19 overall and 10-6 in the NSIC. The two teams will play a doubleheader again tomorrow starting at 12:00 pm in Fayette, Iowa.
