(Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women’s Softball team traveled to Bismarck, N.D. on April 19-20 to take part in the final NSIC Crossover of the season. Minnesota, Crookston struggled to get the offense going losing three games on Saturday by scores of 10-1, 7-0, 9-0 to SW Minnesota State, Wayne State and Winona State.
On Sunday, the Golden Eagles took on Upper Iowa University in the first game of the day. UMC only had three hits, but scored one run on a squeeze play in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn a 1-0 NSIC victory, the teams first of the season. Steph Thomas (Fr, P, St. Albert, Alberta) pitched an outstanding game for the Golden Eagles. Thomas threw all seven innings, giving up five hits while striking out four and not walking a UIU batter. Offensively, Amy Burke (So, OF, Crookston, Minn.), Mallory Watson (Fr, C, Calgary, Alberta) and Lorelei McGee (Jr, OF, Moose Lake, Minn.) each had a hit for the Golden Eagles. In the fifth inning, Watson led off with a single, Shawna Steinbrink (Jr, 3B, Crookston, Minn.) put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Watson to second. Watson moved to third on a UIU error and McGee laid down a perfect bunt on a safety squeeze play to score Watson for the eventual game winner. The Peacocks threatened in the seventh inning but solid Golden Eagle defense helped UMC hold on to the 1-0 victory.
In the afternoon game, Concordia- St. Paul defeated Minnesota, Crookston by a score of 6-0 with only two runs being earned in the contest.
