(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston has named Scott Sorenson as its new assistant men’s basketball coach and assistant women’s softball coach. He comes to the Golden Eagles after a two-year stint as assistant men’s basketball coach and head women’s tennis coach at Bemidji State University.

“Scott comes highly recommended from the previous coaching staffs he has worked with. He has a lot of experience at the high school, college and professional levels and has worked in all facets of a basketball program,” says Head Coach Jeff Oseth. “Scott knows the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and understands the high level of basketball that is played in the league and has a good feel for the type of student athletes we want to have here at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.  I am looking forward to working with Scott, and I know he will be a tireless worker with Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball.”

Sorenson, a native of Crystal, Minn., spent two seasons as assistant men’s basketball coach at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. He spent one season as head coach of the Niagara (Ont.) Gamblers of the Ontario Professional Basketball Association and two seasons with De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, Minn. Sorenson also served as an office assistant for the University of Minnesota men’s basketball program from 1998-2000.

Sorenson coached the Bemidji State Women’s Tennis team from 2006-2008. In that time, he led the 2007-08 squad to a school record in wins and coached the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) MVP.

"The opportunity to work as a fulltime coach for an up-and-coming athletic program like the University of Minnesota, Crookston is a chance I just couldn't pass up.  Coach Oseth undoubtedly has the men's basketball program headed in the right direction.  He has brought in student-athletes with the kind of work ethic that every coach loves to work with,” states Sorenson. “I hope to help continue to recruit and bring in student-athletes of the highest caliber, both on and off the court.  The opportunity to continue to work at the scholarship level of college basketball and stay within the toughest conference in Division II in the NSIC is something I'm definitely excited about.  I also greatly enjoyed my time at Bemidji State as the Head Coach of the women's tennis team there.  Working with the women gave me a broader view on coaching and made me a better coach overall.  The opportunity to continue to work on the other side of the gender line with the women's softball team at Minnesota, Crookston is something I truly covet,” Sorenson adds.
