Golden Eagles Earn First NSIC Victory, Downing Bemidji State 3-1

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) women’s volleyball team returned to Lysaker Gymnasium this afternoon for the team’s second conference game in as many days. The Golden Eagles were in control early, taking the first two sets, Bemidji State responded to take game three, but UMC stayed the course and won the fourth set to take the match victory 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23). The four set match saw 21 tie scores and 20 lead changes. University of Minnesota, Crookston’s Amber Meyer (OH, 6’2, SO, Paxton, Neb.) followed up her 16 kill performance last night with a new season high of 18 kills this afternoon. The 18 kills is just one kill shy of her career high as a Golden Eagle. Meyer also led all main attackers in attack percentage with a solid .406 (18K-5E-32TA). Kate Holmquist (S, 5’6, FR, Middleton, Wis.) led Minnesota, Crookston with 22 assists followed closely by Cassie Yates (S, 5’10, SR, Buffalo, Minn.) who finished the match with 21 set assists. Jaclyn Slepicka (LIB, 5’2, JR, Crystal Lake, Ill.) stepped up play in the victory, closing out the match with three service aces and 17 defensive digs. As a team, the Golden Eagles finished the match with 14 total team blocks. Leading the way at the net were Andrea Hubbell (MH, 6’1, SO, Isle, Minn.) and Allison Zajicek (MH, 6’0, SR, Beatrice, Neb.) who finished with one solo block and three assisted blocks each. Nicole Olson paced Bemidji State with 11 kills. Setter Courtney Bitter assisted on 29 of the Beavers 44 kills and added nine kills and nine defensive digs. Allison Kunde led all servers with five service aces and Jessi-Beth McCannell led all players with 19 defensive digs. The Golden Eagles improve to 1-11 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC, while the Beavers drop to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play. UMC goes back on the road next weekend as the team travels to Concordia- St. Paul and St. Cloud State University on Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27.
