(Bismarck, N.D.)- There wasn’t a team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) that wanted to face the University of Mary today after they were dismantled by Minnesota State last weekend 40-0 in Mankato, Minn. The conference schedule didn’t smile on the Golden Eagles as they were chosen to face the Marauders at the Community Bowl in Bismarck, N.D. today. Mary made their intentions of redemption known early, putting up 14 first quarter and 24 second quarter points on the Golden Eagles to take the 52-9 victory.
The Golden Eagle defense played a solid game despite being on the field for over 35 minutes. The Mary scoring was focused less on the Marauder offense and more on the UMC offense which turned the ball over to the opposition too many times. Minnesota, Crookston’s offense threw one interception and fumbled three times, losing two with one being returned for a Mary score in the second quarter. Jake Poehler (QB, 6’1, 175, FR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) took a majority of the snaps at quarterback for UMC. He finished the day 9-17 for 68 yards and an 11 yard touchdown strike to Terrance Hopkins (TE, 6’1, 260, SR, Canyon Country, Calif.) in the fourth quarter. Hopkins and Aaron Wall (WR, 6’5, 210, SO, New Orleans, La.) were Poehler’s main targets on the afternoon. Both receivers caught five passes with Hopkins gaining 48 yards and Wall gaining 35 yards. Tyler Dugan (DB, 5’11, 180, SR, Irvine, Calif.), Ben Welch (DB, 5’10, 205, SR, Bloomington, Minn.) and Kyle Gratzek (LB, 6’0, 215, FR, Argyle, Minn.) led the Golden Eagle defense with seven total tackles each.
Mary quarterback Henry Lau completed 11 of 17 passes for 141 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Marauders to victory. Opening up the passing game for Lau was running back Jamal Lomax who rushed for 129 yards on 15 carries with a long of 48 yards and two scores. Wide receiver Mike Williams made his three receptions count as he went in for two scores. Defensively, Chris Moody led Mary with five total tackles. North Division Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year Shawn Melland recovered a Golden Eagle fumble and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown.
The Golden Eagles are 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC, while the Marauders move to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC. Minnesota, Crookston returns home next weekend to host MSU Moorhead for UMC homecoming. Kick-off for the contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on KROX-1260 AM at http://www.umcrookston.edu/people/services/MediaServ/stream.htm and watch all Golden Eagle games live on Northern Sun TV at http://www.northernsun.tv/.
