(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Hunt Seat Equestrian team traveled to Madison, Wis. for their opening show this past Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Eagles performed tremendously both days.

On Saturday, Kelsey Sherman (Fr, Lansing, Mich.) and Heather Fogelson (Fr, Grant, Minn.) were the High Point and Reserve High Point riders of the competition. The team overall captured enough points to come in third overall which was just one point behind the Reserve Championship.

“I was extremely pleased with how well Kelsey rode in both her jumping and flat classes and won them both against tough riders,” says Golden Eagle Hunt Seat Coach Brooke Leininger. “She is a huge asset to the team. Heather, who was third in Novice jumping and first in Intermediate flat, had two great rides to take the Reserve High Point.”

Open Flat rider Jessica Biddle (Sr, Elburn, Ill.) came in second in a group of top riders. Coach Leininger was extremely pleased to see how well she placed against that level of competition. Ashley Copa (So, Fargo, N.D.) was third in Open Flat and Paige Harty (Jr, Waseca, Minn.) came in third in Novice Flat. Advanced Walk Trot Canter rider Lindy Hasauer (Sr, Moorhead, Minn.) demonstrated how strong she had come back for her final season by winning her class. Advanced Walk Trot Canter rider Elsa Lunden (So, Annandale, Minn.) had a nearly perfect trip and also won her class.  Janice Holdvogt (So, Eden Valley, Minn.) took a third in Walk Trot.

Sunday was another exciting and successful competition. The team rode extremely well and came in a close fourth place overall. Open rider Laura Critchett (So, Shoreview, Minn.) started the competition on the right foot by capturing third place in Open Jumping. The Novice Jumping riders Kelsey Sherman and Nicole Veres (Jr, Random Lake, Minn.) took first and second place respectively, giving U of M, Crookston the top two placings.

“I was very excited to see them take first and second place in a very competitive division,” says Coach Leininger.

Sherman then went on to capture a third in Intermediate Flat. Veres took third in Novice Flat. Newcomer Tandra Klein (So, Hazen, N.D.) took third in Intermediate Flat. Brittney Skoien (Jr, Wannaska, Minn.) took second place in Beginner Walk Trot Canter on a tough draw. Jenae Hanson (Sr, Andover, Minn.) took second place in Advanced Walk Trot Canter.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston Hunt Seat Equestrian team will return to action on Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26 when they host their own competition at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC) on the U of M, Crookston campus.
