(Aberdeen, S.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston football team traveled to Aberdeen, S.D. today to take on the Wolves in a rare 2:30 p.m. start. UMC looked to ride the momentum of a big 20-16 homecoming victory last weekend to spoil Gypsy Days at Northern State University. The Wolves had different plans as NSU scored 28 first half points in the 35-0 victory.
Northern State quarterback, Eric Ellingson set the pace of the game early for the Wolves. He completed 19-27 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Ellingson also had a 13-yard rush for a score and was accountable for 24 of the Wolves 35 points. NSU’s Jerry Brooks led all running backs with 65 yards on 10 carries, while NSU’s receiving core was led by Mike Stamp who grabbed five passes for 40 yards.
Jake Poehler (QB, 6’1, 175, FR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Tim Ennis (QB, 6’2, 205, SO, Lancaster, Calif.) shared time taking snaps for the Golden Eagles. Poehler completed 4-7 passes for 13 yards, while Ennis went 3-7 for 39 yards. Golden Eagle quarterbacks were pressured all game and were sacked five times for a loss of 37 total yards. Leading the ground game was David Anderson (RB, 6’0, 180, FR, Winnipeg, Manitoba) who rushed for 24 yards on nine carries. UMC quarterbacks found five different receivers in the game. Leading the wide-outs was Cornelius King (WR, 5’5, 145, FR, Sebastian, Fla.) who grabbed three passes for a game-high 53 yards. Kyle Gratzek (LB, 6’0, 215, FR, Argyle, Minn.) continues to be a force on the defensive side of the ball for UMC. He led all players with eight (four solo, four assisted) tackles and tallied one sack. Gratzek currently leads the team with 37 total tackles on the season.
The Golden Eagles are now 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC, while the Wolves move to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC. UMC hosts the Huskies of St. Cloud State next weekend at Ed Widseth Field.
