Calvin McMullen, Jr.

(Fayette, Iowa)-  The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Football team traveled to Fayette, Iowa today for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) regular season finale with Upper Iowa University (UIU). UMC took a 22-3 lead early but UIU rallied back to tie the game in the fourth quarter and take it into double-overtime. The Peacocks would take advantage of a UMC missed extra point in the second overtime to take the 37-36 victory.
 
The Golden Eagles jumped out early, taking just one play and 15 seconds to score the games first points. Calvin McMullen, Jr. (RB, 6-0, 180, SR, Sparta, Ga.) took a hand-off from quarterback Derick Heitkamp (QB, 6-2, 200, FR, Lilburn, Ga.) on the first play of the game and scampered 40-yards for the score. After holding the Peacocks off the board, UMC again scored on the team’s first play of the drive. It was McMullen again breaking free, this time for an 80-yard rush to go up 14-0. UIU’s kicker Jason Price connected on a 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-3. With 1:31 left in the first quarter, it was McMullen again getting the call. To cap off his final game as a Golden Eagle, he took the ball 85-yards for a 22-3 lead. That run was the second longest rush in Golden Eagle history (92-Mark Olsonawski/85-R.J. Rollins). UIU quarterback Ben Curran rushed for a 1-yard score at the 12:39 mark of the second quarter for the only score to put the Peacocks within 12 points 22-10 at halftime.
 
Upper Iowa came out in the second half and scored two touchdowns within the first five minutes. Kyle Hosch rushed for a 14-yard scored and a 2-yard score to cap off a 20-0 UIU run to give the Peacocks the first lead of the game 23-22 going into the fourth quarter. Minnesota, Crookston scored first in the fourth quarter on a Kalil Field-Mackall (RB, 5-11, 220, SO, El Paso, Tex.) 1-yard rush to cap a eight play, 60 yard drive. McMullen rushed for the two-point conversion to put UMC up 30-23. Upper Iowa struck back just a minute later on a Hosch 44-yard run to tie the game 30-30. Both teams played scoreless for the final 12:47 to send the game into overtime.
 
The first session of overtime saw neither team scoring any points. In the second overtime, UMC struck first on a Field-Mackall 4-yard rush. The crucial extra point was missed and would play a role in the final score. Upper Iowa took advantage of a timely UMC penalty in the second overtime to set up La’Mont Williams on a 3-yard rush to tie the game. Kicker Jason Price, who has been perfect all season on extra point attempts, sealed the win for the Peacocks with a perfect point-after and the 37-36 victory.
 
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was senior Calvin McMullen who rushed for 219 yards on 23 carries. He averaged 9.5 yards/carry with a long of 85-yards and scored three touchdowns. McMullen carried most of the offense as UMC quarterback’s only threw 13 times. Minnesota, Crookston rushed for a total of 191 yards, good for second best on the season. The team also scored five rushing touchdowns in the game, good for the highest total on the season. The Golden Eagle defense finished the game with a season high 112 total tackles. The defense was led by Tom Martinez (LB, 5-11, 210, FR, Buford, Ga.), Tyler Dugan (DB, 5-11, 180, SR, Irvine, Calif.) and Enrique Julien (DL, 6-2, 275, SR, Miami, Fla.) who each recorded nine total tackles in the contest. Tayler Michels (DB, 6-6, 220, SR, Pelican Rapids, Minn.) recorded eight total tackles and grabbed a crucial interception and returned it 25-yards.
 
The Peacocks were led by Hosch who rushed for 199-yards on 22 carries. He scored three touchdowns and averaged nine yards/carry. Curran went 9-21 through the air, connecting with Zach Schaeffer three times. Mike Slaughter played an outstanding game on the defensive side of the ball, recording 13 total tackles, one sack and 4.5 tackles for a loss of 15-yards.
 
The Golden Eagles end the season 2-9 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC. The Peacocks improve to 2-9 overall and 2-8 in the NSIC.
