(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team opened up the 2008-09 regular season at home tonight against the University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM). The Golden Eagles tied a game record with 10 blocked shots and built a 21-point lead in the second half to take the 91-75 non-conference victory.
 
In the first half, the Golden Eagles could only convert 20 Cougar turnovers into 12 points as UMC went into halftime up by just nine points, 41-32. UMC exploded with a 14-2 run to start the second half and take a 55-34 lead. Morris returned the favor with a 17-5 run later in the half to get the game back to a nine point deficit 60-51. The depth of the Golden Eagles proved to be the difference as UMC shot 50 percent (17-34) from the field to UMM’s 34 percent (12-35) in the second half to earn the victory.
 
Minnesota, Crookston opened the season with four players scoring in double-digits. Diana Taddy (G, 5-8, SO, Two Rivers, Wis.) led the Golden Eagles with 18 big points on the night. She went 6-9 from the field, 1-1 from beyond the arc and 5-6 from the free-throw line. She grabbed six defensive rebounds and tallied a game high five steals. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) went 5-8 from the field and 6-9 from the free-throw line to score 16 points, 11 coming in the first half. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) added 15 points and shot 70 percent (7-10) from the free-throw line. She tied a career high with six assists in the home opener. Lauren Kessler (C, 6-1, FR, Albertville, Minn.) rounded out the top scorers with 12 points on 6-7 shooting. She tied a game high with eight (two offensive, six defensive) rebounds and led all players with six blocks.
 
The Cougars were led by Tynell Kocer who scored 15 points before fouling out in the second half. Kocer shot 4-9 from the field, 4-7 from long range and 3-5 from the free-throw line. She was followed by Jenni Noordmans who scored 12 points and Nikki Washek who scored 11 points for Morris. Noordmans and Jamie Rainey each dished out five assists in the game. Steph Roggenbuck led the team on the boards grabbing eight (one offensive, seven defensive) rebounds.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 1-0 on the season while Minnesota, Morris falls to 0-1 overall. The Golden Eagles return to Lysaker Gymnasium on Saturday, November 22 to host Crown College in non-conference action. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
