(St. Cloud, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team closed out the Radisson Suite Hotel / St. Cloud Hoopster Classic in St. Cloud, Minn. against the Metropolitan State College (Metro State) of Denver Roadrunners. A combination of a slow start and turnovers doomed the Golden Eagles in the 85-66 Metro State victory. The Golden Eagles shot a solid 54 percent (13-24) from the field in the first half but couldn’t keep up with the hot shooting Roadrunners who shot 56 percent (21-37) from the field. UMC turned the ball over eight times in the first session that turned into 15 Metro State points and a 59-38 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles battled back in the second half, holding Metro State to a 38 percent shooting percentage from the field. Metro State controlled the boards however, outrebounding UMC 38-26 including 17 offensive rebounds to solidify the non-conference victory. Minnesota, Crookston was led by Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) who scored 19 points, shooting 6-13 from the field, a career high 5-7 from 3-point range and 2-2 from the free-throw line. Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, 190, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) scored eight points, grabbed a team high six rebounds (one offensive, five defensive) and tied a career high with five assists. Metro State was led by Jesse Wagstaff who paced all scorers with 27 points in the game. Wagstaff went 10-15 from the field, 5-7 from beyond the arc and 2-3 from the free-throw line. He was the only Roadrunner to score in double-digit points. Daniel Bass led all players with eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive), while Brian Minor led the Roadrunners with six assists. The Golden Eagles are 0-2 overall on the season while Metro State improves to 1-1 overall. UMC returns to the court on Saturday, November 22 when they travel to Morris, Minn. to take on the Cougars.
