Golden Eagle Equestrian Teams Have Stellar Shows at South Dakota State University

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Hunt Seat and Western Equestrian teams traveled to Brookings, S.D. for shows at South Dakota State University on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16. The Golden Eagles continued their winning ways with both teams having successful shows.

 

Hunt Seat Team

 

Coach Brooke Leininger’s Hunt Seat Team kept the momentum by taking home the Reserve High Point Team title on Saturday. Tandra Klein (So, Hazen, N.D.) took second place in Intermediate Jumping followed by third place in Novice Flat. Sarah Wells (So, Calgary, Alberta), competing for the first time for U of M, Crookston, won her class in Novice Jumping. Kelsey Sherman (Fr, Lansing, Mich.) took third place in her Intermediate Flat Class. Heather Fogelson (Fr, Grant, Minn.) took second place in the Intermediate Flat Class and Jessica Biddle (Sr, Elburn, Ill.) took third. In Advanced Walk Trot Canter, Lindy Hausauer (Sr, Moorhead, Minn.) won her class to qualify for the Regional Championships in River Falls, Wis. this February. took a second in their respective Advanced Walk Trot Canter sections. The day ended on a winning note when Lydia Lestingi (Fr, Clemons, N.Y.) took second place in Walk Trot. “I was very pleased with how well everyone rode,” says Golden Eagle Hunt Seat Coach Brooke Leininger. “We are now looking forward to our last show of the fall season which will be in River Falls, Wisconsin on December 5-6.” The team is currently standing in second place in the region.

 

Western Team

 

Coach Nicky Overgaard’s crew closed out the weekend with a solid showing on Sunday. The Golden Eagles brought home the High Point Team award for Sunday’s show. U of M, Crookston scored a team total of 27 points. The team was led by the show’s High Point Rider, Amanda Peterson (Jr, Rochester, Minn.). Peterson won the Open Horsemanship Class and took sixth place in the Reining Class. Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (Fr, Hawley, Minn.) turned in a blue ribbon in the Intermediate II Class.  Riders Mary Hurley (So, Grand Meadow, Minn.) and Kayla Klein (So, Hazen, N.D.) also helped the team bring home high point honors by placing third in their respective classes. Becky Rhodus (So, Kansas City, Missouri) placed fourth in her Intermediate II Class. This qualified her for the Regional Competition in River Falls, Wis. this March. The win this weekend ties the University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Equestrian team with South Dakota State University in the overall western team point standings. “We are looking forward to North Dakota State University this upcoming weekend to finish off our fall horse show schedule,” says Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard.  “The team is working hard and it is paying off.”
