Valley City Bench Sparks 82-80 Victory over Golden Eagles

(Valley City, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball traveled to Valley City State University (VCSU) on Tuesday, November 25 to take on the Vikings in a non-conference game. The game came down to the wire as the Vikings snuck out the non-conference win 82-80 in front of the home crowd. The Golden Eagles led the Vikings in several stat categories in the game. UMC outshot (.422-.345) VCSU from the field, out rebounded the Vikings 44-38 and blocked seven VCSU shots. The Vikings however led in point-scoring categories including 3-pt field goals made with 10, a .821 free-throw percentage, 24 points off turnovers and 28 bench points to take the win. U of M, Crookston dominated down low scoring 38 points in the paint. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) recorded her first double-double as a Golden Eagle scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led all scorers with 19 points, shooting 6-8 from the free-throw line and dishing out three assists. Lauren Kessler (C, 6-1, FR, Albertville, Minn.) and Diana Taddy (G, 5-8, SO, Two Rivers, Wis.) scored 10 points each. Kessler added three blocks in the game while Taddy delivered on three assists. Rounding out the top scorers was Kim Grant (C, 6-2, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) who scored nine points, shot 3-5 from the field, 3-3 from the free-throw line and blocked three shots in just seven minutes of play. The Vikings shot 47 percent (10-21) from long range as a team to help them in the victory. Leading the way for VCSU was Caitlyn Wojahn who scored 16 points, shot 4-6 from beyond the arc and dished five assists in 38 minutes of play. Abby Rittenhouse and Emily Goedert added 15 points each, followed by Brittany Olson’s 11 points. Leading on the boards was Amanda Brown who fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine rebounds and 10 points on the night. The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 2-1 on the season while Valley City improves to 3-5 overall. The Golden Eagles open NSIC play on December 5 and 6 when they host Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State. Game times are set for 6 p.m. both nights. The F-M Acro team will be performing at halftime of the men’s game on December 6. Bring the entire family out for an exciting night.
