Early Lead Not Enough as Yellowjackets Defeat Golden Eagles 93-81

(Bismarck, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team opened the 2008 University of Mary Classic on Friday, November 28 against Montana State University- Billings (MSU-Billings). The Golden Eagles led early but the Yellow Jackets rallied back for the 93-81 victory.
Minnesota, Crookston led by as many as five points through six minutes of play. At the 14:05 mark of the first half, Alira Carpenter hit a jumper to give the Yellowjackets the lead which they held for the rest of the game. Both teams shot well from the floor. UMC shot 45% while MSU-Billings shot 51% from the field. The teams hit eight 3-pointers each in the contest with the only substantial statistical difference being bench points in which UMC led 28-17.
The Golden Eagles were led by Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who ended the game with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) had 14 points and eight rebounds while Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) scored 10 points off the bench. Diana Taddy (G, 5-8, SO, Two Rivers, Wis.) added a season high seven assists in the game. Taddy’s career high of nine assists was recorded last year against MSU-Billings (11/24/07).
MSU- Billings was led by Alira Carpenter who finished with 30 points, two steals, three 3-pointers and was 11-of-18 from the floor. Kayla Ryan scored 14 points with Jen Smith putting in 11 points. Shantell Marquis had a solid game with 13 points, nine assists and three steals while hitting 7-of-8 from the line.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 2-2 on the season while Montana State- Billings improves to 3-1 overall. The Golden Eagles open NSIC play on December 5 and 6 when they host Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State. Game times are set for 6 p.m. both nights. The F-M Acro team will be performing at halftime of the men’s game on December 6. Bring the entire family out for an exciting night.
