Hamline University Downs Golden Eagles 6-4

(Crookston, Minn.) – Hamline University opened up a 4-0 lead after one period and withstood a late University of Minnesota, Crookston rally to take home a 6-4 non-conference victory tonight at the Crookston Civic Arena.

 

The Pipers came roaring out of the gates with four goals in just over the first 17 minutes of the game. Cole Scattarelli opened the scoring at 4:05. Nick Zilka gave Hamline University a 2-0 lead at 7:39. Jim Erickson got in the goal column at 14:03. All three goals were even strength. Dustin Fulton gave the Pipers a 4-0 lead with a power play goal at 17:12.

 

The Golden Eagles finally got on the board at 1:55 of the second period when Jake Delisle (So, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Matthew Justice (So, Fwd, Parker, Colorado). Hamline University countered with an even-strength goal by Fulton at 3:09.  The Pipers took a 6-1 lead at 17:42 of the second period when Andrew Birkholz scored an even-strength goal.

 

The third period was all U of M, Crookston as they scored three unanswered goals. Brent Swanson (Jr, Fwd, Mason City, Iowa) started things off at 5:36 when he scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Brett Saari (Sr, Fwd, Green Bay, Wis.). The Golden Eagles got another goal closer as Swanson scored off the power play at 7:29. He was assisted by Spencer Svertson (So, Def, Wasilla, Alaska) and Saari. U of M, Crookston’s final goal came at 19:35 when Matt Marchel (Jr, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) scored an unassisted, power play goal to make the final score 6-4.

 

The Pipers out-shot the Golden Eagles 49-22. Chris Berenguer added three assists for Hamline University.

 

The Pipers improve to 7-2 on the season. The University of Minnesota, Crookston falls to 1-8-0.

 

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6 when they host Finlandia University in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) games. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively at the Crookston Civic Arena.
