Blue Devils Take Super 8 Turkey Shootout Championship 68-63 over Golden Eagles

(Menomonie, Wis.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team battled for the 2008 Super 8 Turkey Shootout Championship against the University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout). The Golden Eagles did not score a point through the first 5:26 of the game. The team went down eight points in the first half but rallied back to win the second half 38-35. The Blue Devils played strong down the stretch to hold off UMC and take the championship with a 68-63 victory.
 
U of M, Crookston shot 29% through the first 20 minutes of play. The team roared back to shoot 50% in the second session. In the game, the Golden Eagles outshot UW-Stout 40% to 34.9% from the floor. Turnovers were key in the Blue Devil victory as UW-Stout rushed UMC into 14 turnovers and converted that into 13 points. The Golden Eagle bench kept the game close, scoring 25 points.
 
Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively for the second time in three games. He scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting. Delano Robinson (G, 6-2, 190, JR, Bloomington, Ill.) and Bryce Cummings (G, 6-2, 185, JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) rounded out the top UMC scorers delivering 12 points each. Cummings was 4-8 from the field and 3-5 from beyond the arc, while Robinson was 6-8 from the line. Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, 190, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) tied a game high with nine rebounds and added six points. Adam Hendricks (F, 6-7, 225, SO, Watertown, Minn.) and Bruce Felts (F, 6-10, 220, SR, Bemidji, Minn.) led all players with three blocked shots each.
 
The Blue Devils were led by Jerrod Buchholtz who scored 23 points, eight in the final five minutes. He was 7-12 from the field, 6-10 from beyond the arc and 3-5 from the free-throw line. Buchholtz also led UW-Stout with nine rebounds in the game. John Donald and J. Enerson-Matthews closed out the top scorers with 12 and 11 points respectively. Nathan Staidl aided his top scorers with seven assists to lead all players.
 
The Golden Eagles are 2-4 overall on the season while the Blue Devils advance to 2-3 overall. The team opens NSIC play on December 5 and 6 when they host Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State. Game times are set for 8 p.m. both nights. The F-M Acro team will be performing at halftime of the men’s game on December 6. Bring the entire family out for an exciting night.
