(Crookston, Minn.) – Finlandia University scored in every period including three goals in the third on their way to a 6-2 victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action today at the Crookston Civic Arena.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring at 10:49 of the first period when Brent Swanson (Jr, Fwd, Mason City, Iowa) scored a power play goal off an assist from Jonathan Frank (Fr, Def, Wallingford, Conn.). Corey Blake evened the score for Finlandia University at 11:05 of the first period when he scored an even-strength goal of assists from Matt Wylie and Quinn McIntosh. The Lions took a 2-1 lead at 19:09 of the first period when Chris Hendrickson scored a power play goal at 19:09 off an assist from Eric Schultz.
Finlandia University stretched their lead to 3-1 at 10:49 of the second period when James Brey scored a power play goal off assists from McIntosh and Wylie.
Nemanja Jankovic made the score 4-1 in favor of the Lions with an even-strength goal at 4:26 of the third period. He was assisted by James Nietsch. U of M, Crookston cut the deficit to two goals at 7:07 of the third when Philip Tesoriero (Fr, Fwd, Boulder, Colo.) scored a power play goal off Frank’s second assist of the game. However, that would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get as Finlandia University scored two more goals. Blake scored his second goal of the game in empty-net fashion at 18:21 to put the Lions up 5-2. He was assisted by Nietsch. Kasey Krueter made the final score 6-2 with an even-strength goal at 19:41 of the third. He was assisted by Hendrickson and Tiger Marcotte.
Mike Wuthrich recorded 29 saves for the Lions while Jacob Schira (Fr, G, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) recorded 36 for U of M, Crookston.
Finlandia University improves to 6-4-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-10-0 overall and 1-7-0 in the MCHA.
U of M, Crookston will return to action on Friday, December 12 and Saturday, December 13 when they travel to Mequon, Wis. to take on Concordia University in MCHA games. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
