Golden Bear Pressure Hands Golden Eagles First Conference Loss of Season

(St. Paul, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team opened the weekend road trip with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match-up with Concordia University- St. Paul tonight. The Golden Bear defense tamed the potent Golden Eagle offense as Concordia University handed UMC its first conference loss of the season 85-64.
The Golden Bears forced Minnesota, Crookston into 27 turnovers. Concordia University used the turnovers to score 28 points to help hold the lead for the entire game. The Golden Bears shot 43% in the first half to take a 19 point lead into the break. Both teams cooled in the second half shooting below 30%. UMC played Concordia University strong in the final 20 minutes of play (37-39), but the first half deficit was too much for the Golden Eagles to recover from.
Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led all players in the game with 21 points to tie her season high. She shot 8-19 from the field, 4-6 from beyond the arc and 1-1 from the free-throw line. Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) followed Zelinsky with a season high12 points, shooting a perfect 8-8 from the line while blocking two shots in the contest. Jenna Dolence (G, 5-8, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) grabbed a career high 11 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Bears were led by Gillian Bjerke’s 18 points. She recorded the only double-double of the game, grabbing 12 rebounds for Concordia. She was followed by Candace Olstad and Jamie Jones who scored 14 points each. Shandrell Duncan closed out the top scorers with 10 points and four blocked shots.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC. Concordia University- St. Paul improves to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Golden Eagles travel to St. Cloud tomorrow night to take on the Huskies. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
