Last Second Shot Downs Golden Eagles for Second Time this Season

(St. Paul, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team traveled to St. Paul tonight to take on the Golden Bears of Concordia- St. Paul (CSP) in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) game. The teams traded leads five times and the score was tied 15 times through 40 minutes of play. With 4.8 seconds to play, CSP’s Mike Cunningham hit a game-winning jumper to give the Golden Bears the 50-48 victory. Earlier this season, Minnesota, Crookston fell to Minnesota Duluth on a jumper with 3.2 seconds remaining in the game. Both teams struggled from the floor in the first quarter. UMC shot 26% and CSP shot 24% leading to a 20-20 halftime tie. The Golden Bears owned the largest lead of five points in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles came out quickly in the second half to take a six point lead with 16:46 remaining. CSP used free-throw shooting to stay in the game as they went to the line 21 times, making 14 free-throws. UMC only went to the line nine times in the game making five. Joe Pashka (C, 6-8, SO, Rosemount, Minn.) shot 5-9 from the field to lead the Golden Eagles with a career high 11 points. Pashka was followed by Bruce Felts (F, 6-10, SR, Bemidji, Minn.) who scored 10 points and blocked three shots. Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) led the team defensively grabbing nine rebounds and stealing two CSP passes. Concordia- St. Paul was led by Mike Cunningham’s 16 points. Sammy Ricks and Craig Heiman scored 10 points each. Heiman grabbed 10 rebounds as well for the only double-double of the night. The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 2-7 overall and 0-3 in NSIC play. Concordia- St. Paul advances to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Golden Eagles travel to St. Cloud tomorrow night to take on the Huskies of St. Cloud State University.
