(Crookston, Minn.) – Concordia University (Wis.) opened up a 3-0 lead after one period of play and withstood a furious third period rally by the University of Minnesota, Crookston to capture a 6-5 victory In Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) play Friday night in Mequon, Wis.

Concordia University opened the scoring at 3:07 of the first period when Ryan Dove scored an even-strength goal off assists from Andy Meyer and Cory Korpas. They extended the lead to two goals at 4:35 when Jonathan Smith scored an even-strength goal off assists from Niclas Soderberg and Jari Sanders. Sanders put Concordia University up 3-0 with a short-handed goal at 7:04. He was assisted by Smith and Stephen Panas.

U of M, Crookston finally got on the board at 11:12 of the second period when John Lombardi (Jr, Fwd, Burnsville, Minn.) scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Brent Swanson (Jr, Fwd, Mason City, Iowa) to make the score 3-1. Concordia University countered at 13:20 when Panas scored an even-strength goal off assists from Smith and Sam Aide. The score became 5-1 at 17:18 when Aide scored an even-strength goal off assists from Panas and Soderberg. The Golden Eagles closed out the second period scoring at 18:40 when Spencer Samson (Fr, Fwd, West Vancouver, B.C.) scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Martin Husicka (So, Fwd, Vsetin, Czech Republic).

Concordia University increased their lead to 6-2 at 5:31 of the third period when Smith scored an even-strength goal off assists from Sanders and Panas. The rest of the game was all U of M, Crookston as the Golden Eagles scored the next three goals. The lead was cut to 6-3 at 12:21 when Nigel Smith (Fr, Fwd, White Rock, B.C.) scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Derek Ricke (Fr, Def, Park Rapids, Minn.). The gap was closed to 6-4 at 18:40 as Samson took advantage of an extra attacker to score his second goal of the game. He was assisted by Jonathan Frank (Fr, Def, Wallingford, Conn.) and Husicka. Samson recorded the hat-trick at 18:59 using the extra attacker again as U of M, Crookston cut the lead to 6-5. He was assisted by Matt Marchel (Jr, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) and Lombardi. Unfortunately, this would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get as Concordia University held them off in the final minute of the game.

Concordia University improves to 2-9-0 overall and 2-7-0 in the MCHA. U of M, Crookston falls to 1-11-0 overall and 1-8-0 in the MCHA. The two teams return to action on Saturday, December 13. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
