Concordia University (Wis.) Gains Sweep Over Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.) – Concordia University (Wis.) outscored the University of Minnesota, Crookston 5-3 in the third period and held on for an 8-7 win in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action today in Mequon, Wis.

 

U of M, Crookston opened up the scoring at 3:52 of the first period when Jared Mieutunnen (So, Fwd, Virginia, Minn.) scored a power play goal off an assist from Fred Kooser (Jr, Fwd, Omaha, Neb.). Concordia University responded at 6:42 when Ray Johnson scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Michael Kautzman. They took a 2-1 lead at 6:42 when Niclas Soderberg scored an unassisted, even-strength goal. The Golden Eagles evened the score at 2-2 when John Lombardi (Jr, Fwd, Burnsville, Minn.) scored a short-handed goal off an assist from Brent Swanson (Jr, Fwd, Mason City, Iowa).

 

Concordia University opened the second period scoring at 1:47 when Eric Domaas scored a power play goal off an assist from Jari Sanders to take a 3-2 lead. U of M, Crookston tied the game at 3-3 when Matt Marchel (Jr, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) scored an even-strength goal at 5:20. He was assisted by Nigel Smith (Fr, Fwd, White Rock, B.C.) and Jonathan Frank (Fr, Def, Wallingford, Conn.). U of M, Crookston took a 4-3 lead at 13:00 when Collin Perry (Jr, Fwd, Grand Forks, N.D.) scored an even-strength goal off an assist from Kooser.

 

The Golden Eagles widened their lead to 5-3 at 1:22 of the third period when Kooser and Perry switched roles with Kooser scoring the even-strength goal off an assist from Perry. Concordia University closed the gap to one goal at 6:32 of the third when Jordan Tomesch scored a power play goal off assists from Cory Kopas and Sanders. U of M, Crookston took a 6-4 advantage at 8:05 when Marchel scored his second goal of the game in even-strength fashion off an assist from Swanson. However, Concordia University took control of the game scoring the next four goals. Domaas found the back of the net at 10:33 with an even-strength goal. He was assisted by Steve Panas. Johnson tied the game at 13:19 with an even-strength goal off an assist from Andy Meyer. Concordia University took a 7-6 lead at 13:57 when Sam Aide scored an even-strength goal off assists from Sanders and Kautzman. They increased the lead to 8-6 at 15:08 as Joel Stevenson scored the game-winner in even-strength fashion off assists from Meyer and Kautzman. The Golden Eagles did close the gap to 8-7 at 17:40 when Frank scored an unassisted, even-strength goal. Unfortunately, that was as close as U of M, Crookston would get.

 

Concordia University improves to 3-9-0 overall and 3-7-0 in the MCHA. U of M, Crookston falls to 1-12-0 overall and 1-9-0 in the MCHA.

 

The Golden Eagles will return to action when they hit the road for a pair of non-conference contests on Friday, January 2 and Saturday, January 3. U of M, Crookston will face the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire respectively. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. on January 2 and 7:05 p.m. on January 3.
