(Grand Forks, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team returned to the hardwood after 17 days off for the holiday break. The Golden Eagles shot 47% from the field in the game but struggled from long range (4-20) and at the free-throw line (6-15). UND drained eight three-pointers and shot 68% (17-25) from the line to secure the non-conference victory 79-60.
 
The Golden Eagles shot well in the first half at 46 % (12-26). North Dakota one-upped UMC shooting 75% for most of the half and finishing the first 20 minutes shooting at a 66% clip. Lopsided foul calls were the difference in the first session as UND went to the line 16 times, converting on 12, while UMC saw the charity stripe only twice. Minnesota, Crookston entered the intermission down 44-26. UMC improved its shooting in the second half firing 48% from the field. Both teams tied for buckets made with 13 in the final 20 minutes but the first half deficit and unequal free-throw opportunities throughout the game were too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome.
 
Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, Minneapolis, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively and tied for the games top scorer with 15 points. He was 6-11 from the field, 1-4 from long range and 2-5 from the free-throw line. Defensively, he grabbed six rebounds in 29 minutes of play. Adam Hendricks (F, 6-7, 225, SO, Watertown, Minn.) tallied 11 points and tied his season high in minutes with 26. UMC’s bench was looked to in the game and scored 31 points as four Golden Eagle starters finished the game with four fouls each.
 
North Dakota was led by Daniel Harkins’ 15 points. He was 6-9 from the field and 3-4 from beyond the arc. Four other Sioux players followed Harkins with double-digit points. O.J. Harrison tallied 14 points, Darius Joseph had 12 points, Travis Mertens with 11 and Travis Bledsoe with 10 points.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 2-9 overall and 0-4 in NSIC play. North Dakota advances to 7-5 overall this season. UMC returns to the court on Friday, January 2 and Saturday January 3 when they play Minnesota State and Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC action. Tip-off on both nights is scheduled for 8 p.m.
