Golden Eagle Women Fall by Three Points to #9 Minnesota State

(Mankato, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team traveled to Mankato, Minn. tonight in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference  (NSIC) action against #9 Minnesota State University (MSU). Minnesota, Crookston rallied from a 13 point first half deficit to get within three points with 58 seconds left in regulation. The Golden Eagles had a shot at the buzzer by Ana Garcia (G, 5-7, SO, Minnetonka, Minn.) but it wouldn’t fall as the Mavericks escape with a 69-66 victory.

Both teams shot well from the floor in the first half, but it was MSU who recorded seven baskets from beyond the arc to help the Mavericks to a 13 point lead through the first half. The Golden Eagles shocked #9 MSU as the team rallied back in the second half. With 58 seconds remaining, Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) hit a three-pointer for UMC to pull the team within three points at 69-66. MSU went on to miss a free-throw shot with seven seconds left and at the buzzer Garcia put up a shot that wouldn’t fall to secure the win for the Mavericks.

Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) returned to conference action with a big night. She tied her season high of 21 points and shot 8-9 from the field, 1-1 from long range and 4-5 from the free throw line. Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in the contest. She was 3-9 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles in rebounds with eight. She added nine points and was 3-9 from the field and 3-5 from the free-throw line.

Alex Andrews led the Mavericks with 14 points on 7-13 shooting. She was followed by three other MSU players who scored in double-digits. Lauren Barber finished with 12 points, Heather Johnson finished with 11 and Joanne Noreen finished with 10 points. Tiffany Moe led all players in rebounds and assists with 10 and eight respectively.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC. Minnesota State advances to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the NSIC. UMC returns to the court tomorrow night to play Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
