Mavericks Top Golden Eagles 80-58 at the Taylor Center

(Mankato, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team traveled to Mankato tonight to host the Mavericks of Minnesota State University (MSU). Turnovers were the Achilles heel for the Golden Eagles as the team gave the ball back to MSU 16 times en route to 20 points off of turnovers for the Mavericks in the 80-58 victory.
Minnesota, Crookston shot just 33% (9-27) in the first half. The Mavericks made 15 baskets in the first half on the way to a 46% field-goal percentage through the first 20 minutes of play. MSU cooled in the second half shooting 37% from the field. The Golden Eagles shot 45% from the field down the stretch. Free-throws were the difference in the second half as MSU went to the line 18 times, converting on 16. UMC went to the line eight times converting on just four.
Joe Paschka (C, 6-8, 245, SO, Rosemount, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively with 11 points on 5-8 shooting. Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, Minneapolis, Minn.) followed Paschka with 10 points and seven rebounds to lead UMC.
The Mavericks were led by Mitch Gosson and Travis Nelson who scored 12 points each. Marcus Hills followed Gosson and Nelson with 11 points in the contest. Nelson also led all players in rebounding with eight boards.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 2-10 overall and 0-5 in NSIC play. Minnesota State advances to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles travel to Marshall, Minn. tonight to play the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
