Wildcats Shoot 47% from the Field to Defeat Golden Eagle Women 89-75

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team returned to Lysaker Gymnasium tonight riding a big win against Southwest Minnesota State on January 3. However the visiting Wayne State Wildcats rallied from a nine point deficit to defeat UMC 89-75 in NSIC action.
 
The Wildcats jumped out to an early eight point lead. UMC was able to fight back and go on a 16-3 run capped off by a Jenna Dolence (G, 5-8, SO, Moorhead, Minn) three-pointer to take a lead 19-16 at the 11:58 mark of the first half. The Wildcats returned the favor and at the 2:21 mark they took the lead back 41-40 on a Clare Duwelius three-pointer. Wayne State continued to rally and finished the half with a 50-42 lead with the help of a 9-2 run. Wayne State came out in the second half and never looked back. Clair Duwelius kept the hot hand scoring 14 second half points and leading all players with 28 points, shooting 6-9 from long range.
 
Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) and Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively with 17 points each. Zabel was 5-6 from the free-throw line, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists in the contest. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored 13 points and recorded a career high eight assists. In just 13 minutes of play, Kim Grant (C, 6-2, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles. In the first half, the UMC bench scored 26 points. Through the final 20 minutes, only two points could be generated by the Golden Eagle bench as Wayne State tightened up defensively.
 
Wayne State was led by Clare Duwelius’ 28 points on 9-15 shooting. She went 4-4 from the free-throw line and 6-9 from long range. Kati Jo Christensen added 13 points while Mara Hjelle added 11 points in the victory.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the NSIC. Wayne State advances to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow night to host Augustana College. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
