Golden Eagle Men Defeat Wayne State 63-58 to Earn First NSIC Victory of Season

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team came into tonight’s contest with NSIC victory number one on their minds. The team has lost five contests by 10 points or less and fans could tell from the opening tip that tonight was going to be different. The teams battled to 11 ties and 10 lead changes in the contest with UMC closing out the game the victor, 63-58. Wayne State opened up strong with an eight point lead at the 7:51 mark of the first half. They led until the 17:21 mark of the second half when the Golden Eagles clawed their way back in to the game to tie the score at 34 each on a Bruce Felts (F, 6-10, 220, SR, Bemidji, Minn.) jumper. The score was tied four more times down the stretch until Felts made two free-throws with one second remaining to clinch the NSIC victory for Minnesota, Crookston. Felts came alive in the second half, leading all UMC players with 12 points. He finished the game with a career high 14 points on 6-10 shooting. Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) led all players in the contest with 18 points. He shot 8-14 from the field and grabbed four steals. Bryce Cummings (G, 6-2, JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) and Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, 190, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) trailed Cubie and Felts with 10 points apiece. Cumming added four assists in the game to lead all players. Jonathon Thomas and Brian Metz had 15 points each to lead the Wayne State Wildcats. Thomas added 12 rebounds for the only double-double of the night. Metz was just one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. As a team, Wayne State grabbed 13 steals and 18 offensive rebounds in the loss. The University of Minnesota, Crookston improves to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in NSIC play. Wayne State falls to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow night to host Augustana College.
