U of M, Crookston Overwhelms Northland College 9-3 in Men’s Hockey

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Hockey team scored four goals in the first and third periods and outshot Northland College 44-24 on their way to an impressive 9-3 victory over the Lumberjacks in Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) action today at the Crookston Civic Arena. The win earned U of M, Crookston the series sweep.

 

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring at 8:07 of the first period when Steve Tschirgi (Fr, Def, Neenah, Wis.) scored an even-strength goal off assists from Fred Kooser (Jr, Fwd, Omaha, Neb.) and Spencer Syvertson (So, Def, Wasilla, Alaska). U of M, Crookston pushed their lead to 2-0 at 9:48 of the first when Matthew Justice (So, Fwd, Parker, Colo.) scored an even-strength goal off assists from Derek Ricke (Fr, Def, Park Rapids, Minn.) and Justin Wolden (Fr, Fwd, Wadena, Minn.). Northland College cut the lead to one goal at 13:05 when Ryan Pageau scored a power play goal off assists from Joe Belanger and Matt McKinlay. The Golden Eagles countered at 14:02 when Kooser scored an unassisted, even-strength goal to put U of M, Crookston up 3-1. Matt Marchel (Jr, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) made the score 4-1 at 15:25 when he scored a power play goal of assists from Kooser and Collin Perry (Jr, Fwd, Grand Forks, N.D.).

 

Northland College scored the first goal of the second period at 8:36 when Marino found the back of the net with an even-strength goal off assists from McKinlay and Ryan Pageau. U of M, Crookston regained the momentum and made the score 5-2 at 10:46 when Wolden scored an unassisted, even-strength goal.

 

Marchel scored his second goal of the game at 11:20 of the third period when he tallied an even-strength goal off Wolden’s assist. Kooser followed up with his second goal of the even-strength variety at 12:21 to make the score 7-2. He assisted by Tschirgi and Perry. Pageau cut the lead to 7-3 when he scored an even-strength goal at 12:44. He was assisted by McKinlay and Matt Tanneberg. Nigel Smith (Fr, Fwd, White Rock, B.C.) put the Golden Eagles up 8-3 at 16:13 with an even-strength goal off an assist from Justice. Philip Tesoriero (Fr, Fwd, Boulder, Colo.) made the final score 9-3 at 19:56 with a power play goal off assists from Marchel and Smith.

 

Jack Hanna (Fr, G, Lino Lakes, Minn.) recorded 21 saves for U of M, Crookston. Daniel McIntosh stopped 35 shots for the Lumberjacks.

 

Northland College falls to 1-13-0 overall and 1-9-0 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles improve to 3-14-0 overall and 3-9-0 in the MCHA.

 

U of M, Crookston returns to action on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17 when they travel to Adrian College for an MCHA series. The puck drops at 7 p.m. (EST) and 3 p.m. (EST).
