Vikings Go on 13-0 Run in Second Half to Down Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team hosted Augustana College tonight in NSIC action. The Golden Eagles couldn’t keep an early six point lead as the Vikings opened up a 13-0 run in the second half to take the victory 71-51.
 
The Golden Eagles started off the night with a quick six point lead on back to back three-pointers from Ana Garcia (G, 5-7, SO, Minnetonka, Minn.) and Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) but Augustana fought their way back taking their largest lead of nine with 1:37 remaining in the first session. The lead changed hands seven times through the first 20 minutes but the Vikings where able to build some separation by shooting 43.8% from long range to take the 33-26 halftime lead. The Augustana offense and defense picked up its game in the second half. The Vikings opened the second half on a 13-0 run while the defense caused 14 turnovers and 20 second half points off turnovers. In the game, UMC committed 21 turnovers leading to 27 Viking points.
 
The Golden Eagles were led by Zelinsky who scored eight points for UMC and dished three assists. Garcia finished with seven points, all in the first half. She shot 2-3 from long range and grabbed three rebounds in 26 minutes of play. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) led Minnesota, Crookston with eight rebounds in 32 minutes of play.
 
Augustana was led by Megan Doyle’s 13 points. She was 5-11 from the field and 3-8 from long range. Whitney Hofer added 12 points and Amy Puthoff scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Kristi Board closed out the top Vikings scorers with 10 points on the night.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC. Augustana improves to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles travel to Grand Forks, N.D. on Tuesday, January 13 to take on the University of North Dakota. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
