North Dakota Uses Big First Half to Defeat Golden Eagles 82-64

(Grand Forks, N.D.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team traveled to Grand Forks tonight to play the University of North Dakota (UND) in non-conference action. UND scored 49 first half points on 47.4% shooting to help the Fighting Sioux to an 82-64 victory. Minnesota, Crookston and North Dakota battled through the first seven minutes of the game with no lead differential of more than six points. At the 12:15 mark UMC got within one point at 19-18. UND fought back and went on a 30-10 run to take a 49-28 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles came out hot in the second half and shot 44.8% from the field while holding UND to 30%. UMC took the second half 36-33 but it wasn’t enough to recover from the first half deficit. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the way for the Golden Eagles with 20 points. She shot 7-12 from the field, 1-2 from long range and 5-7 from the free-throw line. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) tallied a season high 15 points on a career high 5-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) added 11 points and was one rebound away from a double-double with nine rebounds. Zabel added seven assists in a solid 33 minutes of play. Diana Taddy (G, 5-8, SO, Two Rivers, Wis.) closed out the top Golden Eagle scorers with 10 points. North Dakota was led tonight by Kierah Kimbrough’s 24 points and 10 rebounds. She was followed by Kayla Bagaason’s 14 points and five assists. Danye Guinn and Whitney Ledger scored 11 points each and Mallory Youngblut closed out the UND double-digit scorers with 10. The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC. North Dakota advances to 8-9 overall. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday, January 17 to host MSU Moorhead.
