Dragon’s Meghan Rettke Explodes to Defeat Golden Eagles 76-52

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team took on Minnesota State University, Moorhead (MSUM) at Lysaker Gymnasium tonight. It was a short NSIC weekend for the Golden Eagles with this being their only contest. The Dragon’s shot 48.3% from the field in the contest and led by as many as 27 points to take the 76-52 victory.
 
MSUM took off to an early lead with a 12-0 run against the Golden Eagles through the middle of the first half. The Dragon had 22 points in the paint compared to the Golden Eagles eight points through the first 20 minutes of play. The MSUM defense forced 10 turnovers in the first half and turned them into 14 points. The score at half was 40-23 in favor of the Dragons. Meghan Rettke came out the second half for the Dragons on fire. She scored 26 points and had 14 total rebounds in the final 20 minutes of play to solidify the 76-52 victory for the Dragons.
 
Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) led the way for the Golden Eagles on the night with a career high 19 points. She shot 8-12 from the field and was a perfect 3-3 from the free-throw line. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) was second on the team in points with 13 and led all players with two blocked shots. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) led Minnesota, Crookston in total rebounds with seven. The Golden Eagles shot a total of 19-56 (33.9%) from the field in the contest.
 
MSUM led by as much as 27 points at one point in the game. The Dragons were led by Meghan Rettke who had one of those nights you dream about as a player. She scored 35 total points and grabbed 22 total rebounds. She shot 12-18 from the field and was 11-15 from the free-throw line. Putting up 10 points of her own was Allison Nash-Gerlach. As a team, the Dragons were 28-58 (48.3%) from the field in the game. To aid in the victory, MSUM outscored UMC 42-28 in the paint and 25-14 off of turnovers.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 7-9 overall and 3-6 in the NSIC. Minnesota State University, Moorhead advances to 13-3 overall and 6-3 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles travel to Upper Iowa and Winona State on January 23 & 24 in a pair of NSIC contests. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on both nights.
