Golden Eagles Get Within Four Points Late, Dragons Rally Back to Take 64-50 Victory

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team played a tough game against the visiting Minnesota State University, Moorhead (MSUM) team tonight in Lysaker Gymnasium. The Dragon’s went up by as many as 16 points in the second half with the Golden Eagles rallying to within four points. MSUM returned a scoring run late in the game to take the 64-50 NSIC victory. The Dragon’s shot 48% (12-25) in the first half took the largest lead of the half at 12 points at the 7:22 mark. MSUM had 16 points in the paint while the Golden Eagles played strong down low with 12 points in the paint. MSUM hit the locker room after the first 20 minutes with a 30-21 lead. The Dragons opened the lead to 16 points with 11:55 remaining in the game. The Golden Eagles regained their confidence, came out strong and went on a 14-2 run to battle to within four points at the 7:00 mark. The Dragons returned the favor and went on a 13-3 run to take the victory 64-50. Adam Hendricks (F, 6-7, SO, Watertown, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively with 14 points. He shot 5-6 from the field and 4-7 from the free-throw line. Hendricks helped make plays as well as he finished with a game high four assists. Derik Hawkey (G, 6-2, FR, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), Bryce Cummings (G, 6-2, JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) and Matt Heier (G, 6-2, JR, Ray, N.D.) all finished with seven points on the night. The Golden Eagles were 20-42 (47.6%) from the field in the game. The Dragons were led by Xavier Reed who had a game high15 points and eight rebounds in the game. He shot 6-11 from the field and was 2-3 from the free-throw line. Also having a good game for the Dragons was Justyn Burgess who had 14 points on the night. Grant Fossum closed out the top Dragon scorers with 12 points on 4-9 shooting. The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC. Minnesota State University, Moorhead is now 4-9 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles travel to Upper Iowa and Winona State on January 23 and 24 in a pair of NSIC contests.
