Second Half Rally Earns Peacocks 76-73 Overtime Victory over Golden Eagles

(Fayette, Iowa.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team dominated the first 20 minutes of play on Friday night against Upper Iowa University (UIU). In the second half, the roles reversed as UIU rallied back from 22 points down to take the 76-73 overtime NSIC victory.
Minnesota, Crookston shot a blistering 56.7% (17-30) from the floor in the first half. The team’s defense stifled the Peacocks and held them to just 24.1% (7-29) through the first 20 minutes of play to send the teams into the locker room with UMC up 40-20. The momentum changed in the second half and overtime as the officials sent the Peacocks to the line 38 times compared to Minnesota, Crookston’s 23 opportunities at the charity stripe. UIU won the second half 47-27 and overtime 9-6 to clinch the overtime victory.
The Golden Eagles led by 22 points at the 19:16 mark of the second half. Pacing all players was Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) who scored 19 of his 26 points in the first half. He shot 10-14 from the field, 3-4 from long range and 3-4 from the free-throw line. Defensively, Cubie grabbed eight rebounds including three offensive boards. Adam Hendricks (F, 6-7, SO, Watertown, Minn.) followed Cubie with 16 points on 6-10 shooting. Derik Hawkey (G, 6-2, 190, Fr, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) tallied 14 points to close out the top Golden Eagle scorers. Minnesota, Crookston has now fallen eight times this season by 10 points or less.
Upper Iowa was led by Dan Bestul’s 22 points. He was followed by Nick Kramer who scored 14, A.J. Adkins who scored 13, Chris Sullivan who scored 12 and Matt Lesan who scored 11. The Peacocks outrebounded UMC 41-29 with a strong 17 offensive boards in the contest.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 3-14 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa advances to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday night to play Winona State University. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
