Warriors Play Strong in the Paint to Defeat Golden Eagles 80-53

(Winona, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team entered play on Saturday night against Winona State following a tough overtime loss to Upper Iowa on Friday evening. Winona State used 32 points in the paint to take the early lead and hold on to the NSIC victory 80-53.

Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) led the way for the Golden Eagles with 11 points in 25 minutes of play. He added three assists, six rebounds and stole two Warrior passes. Derik Hawkey (G, 6-2, 190, Fr, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and Trent Graves (G, 6-7, 190, Hartford, S.D.) followed Cubie with seven points each, a career high for Graves.

Winona State was led by Jon Walburg’s 14 points. He was followed by Luke Doedens and Joel Armstrong who scored 13 and 10 points respectively. Ben Fischer grabbed a game high 10 rebounds for the Warriors.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 3-15 overall and 1-10 in the NSIC. Winona State advances to 16-5 overall and 9-3 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to Lysaker Gymnasium on January 30 and 31 to host the University of Mary and Northern State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. on both nights.
