Marauders Take Advantage of Scoring Opportunities to Defeat Golden Eagles 95-70

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team hosted the University of Mary tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium in NSIC action.  The Golden Eagles started off with a quick two-point lead but Mary regained the lead at the 15:38 mark in the first half and didn’t look back to take the 95-70 victory.
 
The Golden Eagles scoring was sparked in the first half by Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) who had 11 first half points to lead all players. Anna Skala, Rachel Zillmer and Liz Sipma all had 10 first half points for the Marauders. Anna also led all players with six rebounds. The Marauders shot 46.9% percent from the field and had 13 points off UMC turnovers and 16 second chance points through the first 20 minutes of play. Minnesota, Crookston opened up the second half with a 12-2 run and pulled within four points at the 16:56 mark. The Marauders returned the favor by going on a 21-0 run to solidify the 25 point victory. At the final buzzer, Mary scored 24 points off turnovers to UMC’s 12 and 22 second chance points to UMC’s 10.
 
The Golden Eagles were led by Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who scored 16 points, dished two assists and had two blocks for UMC. Zelinsky was 4-11 from the field and 7-7 from the charity stripe. Eul had a strong night giving the Golden Eagles 13 points and four rebounds on 5-13 shooting. Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) led the Crookston squad with six rebounds in the game.
 
Mary was led by Abby Bratlien who scored 15 points. She was 5-9 from the field and 4-5 from the free-throw line. Sonny Schulz added three three-pointers for 13 points while Anna Skala was a perfect 6-6 from the line on her way to 12 points and led all players with seven rebounds. Rachel zillmer and Liz Sipma matched Skala’s 12 points and Abby Reiter closed out the top scorers with 10 points.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in the NSIC. Mary improves to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow night to host Northern State University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
