Golden Eagles Persevere in Thrilling 64-59 Overtime Victory over Marauders

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team came into tonight’s contest looking for their second NSIC victory of the season against the University of Mary. Minnesota, Crookston was able to hold on to a thrillingly tight game on 53.2% shooting to edge out the Marauders 64-59 in an overtime gem.
 
The Marauders opened the game on a 17-10 run to take the largest lead of the game. The Golden Eagles rebounded and went on a 15-7 run of their own. UMC shot 60% from the field through the first 20 minutes. Derik Hawkey (G, 6-2, 190, FR, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) led all Golden Eagles with nine points in the half. Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, 190, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) played a strong defensive half leading UMC with four rebounds and six points. The Golden Eagles came out of the gates strong in the second half to go on a 15-10 run. The Marauders where able to fight their way back and hold UMC scoreless for the last 5:05 of the second half. The Marauders tied the game with three minutes left and the final minutes of the game where a defensive power struggle that took this game to overtime. 
 
In the overtime, the Golden Eagles looked invigorated but the Marauders where able tie the game three times, before the Golden Eagles could pull away. UMC was able to prevail in the overtime on big free-throw shots by Bruce Felts (F, 6-10, 220, SR, Bemidji, Minn.), Bryce Cummings (G, 6-2, 185, JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) and Matt Pelzer.
 
Derik Hawkey led UMC and tied a game high with 16 points. He was an outstanding 7-8 from the field and 2-2 from long range. Matt Pelzer and Bruce Felts both had 14 points in the contest. Pelzer was 5-11 from the field and 4-4 from the line and tied a game high with seven rebounds. Felts was 5-12 from the field and 4-5 from the charity stripe. He and Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) also finished with seven rebounds apiece.
 
The University of Mary was led by Geoff West tied to lead all scorers with 16 points. Zach Dosch had a strong night scoring 15 points and leading all Marauders with six rebounds. Jason West led all with five assists and added seven points. The Marauders had a tough night from the field, shooting just 36.5%.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston improves to 4-15 overall and 2-10 in NSIC play. University of Mary falls to 5-14 overall and 3-9 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow night to host Northern State. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
