Wolves Dominate in the Paint to Take 80-51 NSIC Victory

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team hosted Northern State University (NSU) tonight in NSIC action. The Golden Eagles looked to take a victory from the Wolves in NSIC play but were stopped by an NSU team that shot 50% (31-62) from the field in the 80-51 victory.
 
Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, SO, Northfield, Minn.) led all players in the first half with 11 first points. Jenna Dolence (G, 5-8, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) led all UMC players with four first half rebounds and added four points. Northern State University was led by Emily Becken with nine points in the first half. Northern State was able to pull away from UMC by going on a 13-2 run from 11:33 to the 5:11 mark of the first half.  The Wolves were took a 37-25 point lead into the half in large part to shooting 45.5% from the field to the Golden Eagles 38.5%. The Wolves entered the second half on a 10-2 run and the Golden Eagles were never able to regain momentum. NSU dominated in the paint scoring 40 points down low to UMC’s 20. The Wolves also took advantage of UMC miscues scoring 21 points off turnovers.
 
Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with 13 points. She shot 5-10 from the field and 3-8 from beyond the arc. She added three rebounds one assist and a steal in a well-rounded night. Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) had a strong eight points and kept the hot hand from the free-throw line going 4-4. Dolence played solid defensively, leading the Golden Eagles in rebounds with seven and adding nine points.
 
Northern State University was led by Emily Becken who led all players with 18 points. She shot 8-10 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range. Becken added four rebounds four assists and two steals. Mikayla Barondeau had a strong night by leading all with nine rebounds.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 8-11 overall and 4-8 in the NSIC. Northern State University improves to 11-9 overall and 7-6 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to Lysaker Gymnasium on February 6 and 7 to host #6 Minnesota State and Southwest Minnesota State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
