Tiffany Moe Nails Three-Pointer at Buzzer to Sneak #21 Mavericks Past Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles played the Minnesota State University (MSU) Mavericks tonight in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match-up. Minnesota, Crookston was looking to avenge a 66-69 loss to MSU on January 2 in Mankato. The same drama unfolded tonight and again it was Mavericks who were able to edge out the Golden Eagles with a Tiffany Moe buzzer beater, 82-79.
 
The first half was a seesaw battle as the score was tied 11 times and changed hands a season high 17 times through 20 minutes. Neither team was able to pull away in the first half with the largest belonging to the Mavericks at five at the 2:24 mark. The Golden Eagles shot 56.5% while the Mavericks shot 40.6% from the field but used 19 points off of turnovers to stay in the game. The second half opened in similar fashion to the first.  There were 21 lead changes and the score was tied 17 times in total with MSU taking the largest lead of the game by six. UMC was able to fight back and bring it back and retake the lead with 4:52 remaining. The game, all tied at 79, was left in the hands of the Maverick’s Tiffany Moe who drained a buzzer beater three- point shot to win the game in dramatic fashion.
 
Megan Eul (F, 5-11, FR, Rosemount, Minn.) led all players and had a career night going 11-17 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the line to finish with 28 points, five rebounds and two assists. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, FR, Northfield, Minn.) played a key role for UMC with 16 points. She shot 5-6 from the field, 5-5 from the free-throw line and added four rebounds and two assists. Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) recorded 15 points and dished a game high five assists. The Golden Eagles as a team shot outstanding from the field going 28-52 (53.8%) on the night.
 
Tiffany Moe led the Mavericks with 17 points. She shot 5-12 from the field and 6-7 from the line, with none bigger than her three-point buzzer beater for the win. Moe was supported by Heather Johnson and Alex Andrews who each had 15 points. The Mavericks shot 42.6% from the field and had 34 points off of UMC turnovers.
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 8-13 overall and 4-10 in the NSIC. #21 Minnesota State moves to 20-1 and 13-1 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow night to host Southwest Minnesota State University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.
