Late Run Lifts Mavericks Past Golden Eagles 77-67

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team played the Minnesota State University (MSU) Mavericks in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) showdown. Both teams where hot and able to shoot over 50% from the field in the game, but it was MSU who took a 12-2 run late to take the 77-67 victory at Lysaker Gymnasium. Both teams started with the hot hand. MSU shot 56.7% with UMC shooting 50% from the field through the first 20 minutes of play. The Mavericks built up a nine point lead and where able to take an eight point lead into the locker room at the half. The Golden Eagles and the Mavericks came out in the second half looking just as hot as the first. Both teams shot outstanding through 40 minutes with MSU finishing at 53.4% and UMC finishing at 50.9%. The difference in the game came down to points off turnovers with the Mavericks getting 17 points to the Golden Eagles nine. Minnesota, Crookston rallied back at the 13:07 mark to take the lead but the Mavericks where able to take it back on the next shot. UMC rallied back again and at the 2:33 mark tied the game for the sixth time. This time, the Mavericks where able to go on a 12-2 run to finish the game and take the conference victory. Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, 190, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) led all shooters with 18 points. Pelzer shot 6-11 from the field and 2-2 from the free-throw line. He added five rebounds two assists and a block. Derik Hawkey (G, 6-2, 190, FR, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and Bryce Cummings (G, 6-2, 185, JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) both had a strong 12 points. Cummings came off the bench and added four assists and shot 4-7 and 2-3 from the line, while Hawkey added two rebounds and two assists and shot 6-12 from the floor in the game. Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) closed out the top UMC scorers with 10 points on 5-11 shooting. The Mavericks Mitch Gosson led the way for his team getting tallying the only double-double of the night. He scored 11 points on 5-8 shooting, grabbed 10 rebounds, and added one assist and a steal. Travis Nelson led the Mavericks in scoring with16 points off of 7-14 shooting. On the defensive side of the ball, Nelson grabbed six rebounds and led all players with three blocked shots. Jesse Clark dished eight assists to lead all players and added 10 points to the MSU total. The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 4-17 overall and 2-12 in NSIC play. Minnesota State improves to 19-5 and 10-4 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court tomorrow night to host Southwest Minnesota State University.
