Mustangs Light Up in Second Half to Earn 67-46 Victory Over Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team blasted out in the first half against Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium shooting 60% in the first half. The Mustangs got hot in the second half to shoot 72% and take the 67-46 NSIC victory.
 
The Golden Eagles exploded out of the gates going on a 16-5 through the first eight minutes of play. UMC kept adding points and were able to build the lead up to 14 at the 3:21 mark. The Mustangs where able to put the pressure on and come back to bring the lead to within seven before the half ended. The Golden Eagles shot an outstanding 60.0% from the field in the first half. To start the second half the tables were turned on the Golden Eagles as the Mustangs went on an 11-3 run. SMSU took their first lead of the game at the 15:50 mark of the second half. The Golden Eagles and Mustang went back and forth but the Mustangs got the upper hand and went on a 22-5 run to finish the game. The momentum change was led by the Mustangs who shot 72.0% from the field in the second half.
 
 Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) tied for the game high with 13 points on 5-8 shooting. Derik Hawkey (G, 6-2, 190, FR, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) had a strong night adding 12 points on 6-10 shooting. Hawkey earned the team play-maker award, dishing out a game-high five assists. Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, 190, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) worked the boards grabbing a team-high four rebounds and blocked the teams only shot.
 
Ross Demasi led the Mustang and was tied for the lead in points with 13. Damasi shot 4-6 from the field, a perfect 5-5 from the line and led all players with seven rebounds. Jon DeRock was second for SMSU scoring 10 points, grabbing five rebounds and dealing three assists. The Mustangs bench was in large part the difference tonight as they scored 34 points to the Golden Eagles 12. 
 
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 4-18 overall and 2-13 in NSIC play. SMSU improves to 20-5 overall and 12-3 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return to the court on February 13-14 as they travel to Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State. Tip-off on both nights is scheduled for 8 p.m.
