Finlandia University Finishes Series Sweep of Golden Eagles

(Crookston, Minn.) – Finlandia University opened up a 2-0 lead after the first period and never looked back on their way to a 6-1 Midwest Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHA) victory over the University of Minnesota, Crookston Saturday afternoon in Hancock, Mich.

 

Blake Miller opened the scoring for the Lions at 8:55 of the first period when he scored a power play goal off assists from Quinn McIntosh and Brandon Van Acker. Matt Manninen made the score 2-0 at 10:49 with an even-strength goal at 10:49 of the first period off assists from Keith Johnstone and Van Acker.

 

Finlandia University did not slow down in the second period as Eric Schultz scored an even-strength goal at 2:26 off assists from Corey Blake and Charlie Benik. Kasey Krueter got into the points column at 3:06 of the second period when he scored an even-strength goal off assists from James Neitsch and C.J. Fisher. With the score 4-0, U of M, Crookston finally got on the board at 5:57 as John Lombardi (Jr, Fwd, Burnsville, Minn.) scored a short-handed goal off assists from Matt Marchel (Jr, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) and Jonathan Frank (Fr, Def, Wallingford, Conn.). The Lions countered at 18:26 when Van Acker scored a power play goal off assists from Miller and Matt Wylie to make the score 5-1.

 

Finlandia University made the final score 6-1 at 15:45 of the third period when Van Acker scored his second consecutive power play goal off assists from Tiger Marcotte and Chris Hendrickson.

 

The Lions improve to 9-10-2 overall and 9-7-2 in the MCHA. U of M, Crookston falls to 3-20-0 overall and 3-15-0 in the MCHA.

 

The Golden Eagles close out the regular season on Friday, February 13 and Saturday, February 14 when they travel to Ashland, Wis. for an MCHA series with Northland College. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
