(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Women’s Equestrian team had a very successful home show this past weekend at the University Teaching and Outreach Center (UTOC). Saturday started out with U of M, Crookston’s Mary Hurley (So, Grand Meadow, Minn.) winning High Point Rider of the day as she took the Open Rail Division and placed fifth in the Reining Division. Amanda Peterson (Jr, Rochester, Minn.) was Reserve High Point Rider of the day placing second in the Reining Division and fourth in the Open Rail Division. Sarah Nowacki (Jr, Stephen, Minn.) and Tandra Klein (So, Hazen, Minn.) both placed third in the Advanced Horsemanship Division. Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (Fr, Hawley, Minn.) took third place in the Intermediate II Division. Kayla Klein (So, Hazen, N.D.) was second in the Novice Division while Anna Steen (Fr, Hanover, Minn.) was second in the Walk/Trot Horsemanship Division. The Golden Eagles were the Reserve Champion High Point team of the day finishing four points shy of North Dakota State University.
Sunday started with a bang as Amanda Peterson was second in the Reining Division and in the Open Division winning the High Point Rider honors for the day. Tandra Klein won the Advanced Horsemanship Division with new region qualifier Lindy Hausauer (Sr, Moorhead, Minn.) taking second behind her. Kayla Klein and Becky Rhodus (So, Kansas City, Missouri) both won in their Novice Horsemanship Classes with Mindy Nieuwboer (So, Kenneth, Minn.) placing second in her Novice Class. In the Intermediate Division, Melissa Zanotelli (Fr, Marshfield, Minn.) placed first followed by a second from Tollefsrud. The Golden Eagles ended the day as the High Point Champion team defeating NDSU by 14 points.
Three additional riders qualified for the Regional Competition at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on March 1. They are Lindy Hausauer, Kayla Klein and Amanda Peterson. Peterson is also leading the region for the High Point Rider American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Cup award. If she finishes the season strong, Peterson will automatically advance to the National Competition, which runs from April 23-26 in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to compete against the nation’s top High Point Riders from every region.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled with the weekend we had at our home show,” says Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard. “I am hoping the momentum will carry through to our final show series at NDSU this coming weekend.”
