Beavers Defeat Golden Eagles 81-72 in Final NSIC Meeting of Season

(Bemidji, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team too Bemidji State University (BSU) down to the wire as there were 14 lead changes and 11 tie scores through the 40 minutes of play. In the end, it was BSU who took advantage of 15 points off UMC turnovers to take the 81-72 victory.
The Golden Eagles and Beavers played almost an identical first half with UMC shooting 47.8% and BSU shooting 48%. Both teams made six three-points but BSU took the advantage on free-throw shooting, going 9-10 from the line to UMC’s 3-9. Minnesota, Crookston took their largest lead of five at the 9:03 mark of the second half. BSU caught fired down the stretch to erase the lead and take their largest lead of 10 points with 15 seconds remaining in the game.
The Golden Eagles dominated the offensive rebounds, grabbing a game total of 11 to BSU’s five and scoring 14 second chance points. Leading all scorers was Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) with 22 points. He was 8-13 from the field, 2-6 from long range and 4-6 from the free-throw line. Cubie also led all players and was one rebound away from a double-double with nine including five offensive boards. Matt Pelzer (G, 6-4, 190, SR, St. Cloud, Minn.) scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and tied a team high with three assists. Derik Hawkey (G, 6-2, 190, FR, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) finished with 13 points and was followed by Bryce Cummings (G, 6-2, 185, JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) who scored 11 points for UMC.
Bemidji State was led by Seth Haake who scored 21 points on 8-10 shooting. Haake was followed by Brady Fairbanks and Taylor Hall who scored 18 points each to close out BSU’s top scorers. Fairbanks also led the Beavers with seven rebounds.
The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 4-20 overall and 2-15 in NSIC play. Bemidji State improves to 8-16 overall and 6-11 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles return home on Saturday, February 21 to host St. Cloud State on Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
