(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Western Equestrian team ended their regular season tied for the Regional High Point team with a solid show at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, N.D. last weekend. On Saturday,
Amanda Peterson (Jr, Rochester, Minn.) started out winning the Reining Class and ended up as High Point Rider of the day. Posting big wins for the Golden Eagles, were
Kayla Klein (So, Hazen, N.D.) in Advanced Horsemanship,
Mindy Nieuwboer (So, Kenneth, Minn.) in the Novice Class and
Amanda Gozel (Jr, Stephen, Minn.) in the Walk/Trot Class.
Sunday proved to be a nail biter with Peterson winning the Reserve High Point Champion Rider of the day title. Additional wins from Jackie Nikkel (So, Lundar, Minn.) and Amanda Gozel (Fr, Shoreview, Minn.) in the Walk/Trot Class helped U of M, Crookston win the Reserve High Point Team title for the day. Three additional riders qualified for the Regional Show on February 28 in River Falls, Wis. by placing well in their divisions. Nieuwboer, Kaitlyn Tollefsrud (Fr, Hawley, Minn.) and Gozel. each gained enough points to qualify for the regional show.
The weekend point total ties the Golden Eagles and NDSU in total overall points for the Regional High Point team. The official tie breaker needs to be verified through the Regional President and Point Keeper before the official results will be known.
Amanda Peterson finishes out the season as the Western Regional High Point rider and will automatically advance to the National IHSA Horse Show on April 23 – 26, 2009 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
U of M, Crookston riders that are qualified for their individual classes are as follows: Open Horsemanship – Amanda Peterson, Reining – Amanda Peterson, Advanced Horsemanship – Mary Hurley (So, Grand Meadow, Minn.), Novice Horsemanship – Sarah Nowacki (Jr, Stephen, Minn.), Kayla Klein, Lindy Hausauer (Sr, Moorhead, Minn.) and Mindy Nieuwboer, Intermediate Horsemanship – Kaitlyn Tollefsrud, Becky Rhodus (So, Kansas City, Missouri) and Walk/Trot – Amanda Gozel.
The Western Regional Horse Show has been changed to February 28, 2009 and will start at 1 p.m. in River Falls, Wis. It was originally scheduled for March 1. The top two riders from each division at the Regional Show will advance to the Semifinals competition in Findlay, Ohio on March 21 – 22, 2009.
“We have a strong group of riders qualified for the Regional Competition and we are hoping to do well there and move onto the semifinals,” says Golden Eagle Western Coach Nicky Overgaard. “At semifinals, the top four individuals will advance to the National Show. Once the official high point team results are known, we will know if we have a team qualified for the semifinals or not.”
