Golden Eagles Upset MSOE 4-1 in First Round of MCHA Playoffs

(Crookston, Minn.) – The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men’s Hockey team had a tall task ahead of it going into its first round game with the third ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) tonight in Milwaukee, Wis. The sixth seeded Golden Eagles proved up to the task scoring three third period goals on their way to a 4-1 upset victory over the Raiders in the first round of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) Playoffs.
U of M, Crookston opened up the game’s scoring 18 seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead as Jonathan Frank (Fr, Def, Wallingford, Conn.) scored a short-handed goal off an assist from John Lombardi (Jr, Fwd, Burnsville, Minn.). MSOE tied the game at 1-1 at 15:23 of the second period when Kyle Smith scored a power play goal off assists from Matthew Buha and Jason Woll.
The third period proved to be in the favor of the Golden Eagles as Fred Kooser (Jr, Fwd, Omaha, Neb.) scored a power play goal at 18:47 of the stanza to put U of M, Crookston up 2-1. He was assisted by Brett Saari (Sr, Fwd, Green Bay, Wis.). The Golden Eagles put the game away with two empty net goals. Steve Tschirgi (Fr, Def, Neenah, Wis.) scored off assists from Matt Marchel (Jr, Def, Grand Forks, N.D.) and Philip Tesoriero (Fr, Fwd, Boulder, Colo.) at 19:24. Lombardi made the final score 4-1 at 19:48 off assists from Tesoriero and Bryan Dalbec (Fr, G, Superior, Wis.).
Dalbec continued his stellar play in net stopping 37 MSOE shots. Conner Toomey had 25 saves for MSOE.
The Raiders fall to 13-11-1. U of M, Crookston improves to 6-20-0. The two teams meet again tomorrow at 4 p.m. A Golden Eagle victory or tie advances them in the MCHA playoffs. MSOE will have to win both game two and the min-game to advance.
