Huskies Defeat Golden Eagles 84-59 on Senior Day

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team hosted St. Cloud State University this afternoon on Senior Day at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Huskies took control early and shot 45% from the field to take the 84-59 NSIC victory.

The Golden Eagles and Huskies started the first half swapping ties. The Huskies took control at the 16:19 mark when they went on an 11-2 run to and finished the first half with a 42-24 lead. Minnesota, Crookston played tough in the second half but costly turnovers in the game led to 20 SCSU points through 40 minutes of play. The size advantage also went to the Huskies as they outscored UMC 42-22 in the paint and grabbed 49 rebounds to UMC’s 27 including 15 offensive boards. 

The Golden Eagles where led by Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored nine first half points off of 3-6 shooting from the field. Zelinsky finished tied for the game high in points with 16 off of 5-9 shooting from the field and went 5-7 from the free-throw line. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, FR, Northfield, Minn.) finished second in scoring for the Golden Eagles with 10 points with the help of 6-6 shooting from the charity stripe.  Gina Jaroszewski (F, 5-11, SO, Moorhead, Minn.) had a strong night leading the Golden Eagles with five rebounds and added nine points all from long range.

The Huskies where led by Anna Cashman who was tied to lead all players with 16 points. Cashman shot 5-9 from the field and 5-7 from long range. Katies Tacheny added 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Rachel Booth added 11 points and seven rebounds while Krystal Scott scored six points and grabbed a game high nine rebounds.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston moves to 9-16 overall and 5-13 in the NSIC, the Huskies move to 19-6 overall and 12-6 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles travel to Bismarck, N.D. on Wednesday, February 25 to take on the Marauders from the University of Mary. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
