St. Cloud Sneaks Out of Crookston with 84-70 NSIC Victory

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) Men’s Basketball team stood tall for 40 minutes on Senior Day today against St. Cloud State University. Despite being down by as much as 25 points, the Golden Eagles refused to back down and played the Huskies to an 84-70 final. The Huskies started on a quick 10-2 run to open the game but the Golden Eagles where able to fight their way back. At the 9:55 mark of the first half the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game and was able to build up a four point lead at the 6:11 mark. The Huskies were able to return the favor and went on a 5-0 run to finish the half with a five point lead 33-28. The Huskies shot 52% from the field in the first half to the Golden Eagles 36%. The Huskies continued with the hot hand going on a 6-0 run to start the second half. SCSU kept building the lead and by the 11:15 mark of the second half the Huskies had a 25 point advantage. The Golden Eagles closed the margin to 14 points late but that was a close as they could come. The Golden Eagles and the Huskies each shot a staggering 60% from the field in the second half with the Huskies finishing the game shooting 56.9% to the Golden Eagles 47.2% from the field. This game was decided in large part to points off turnovers as the Huskies scored 29 to the Golden Eagles 14. The Golden Eagles where led by Akeem Cubie (G, 6-5, 180, SO, Minneapolis, Minn.) who scored 19 points in the contest. He was 7-15 from the field, 2-4 from long range and 3-5 from the free-throw line. He grabbed a team high six rebounds and dished five assists. Cubie was followed by Delano Robinson (G, 6-2, 190, JR, Bloomington, Ill.) who scored 13 points on 4-11 shooting and dished a team-high six assists. Robinson was also perfect from the line going 4-4. Matt Heier (G, 6-2, 175, JR, Ray, N.D.) closed out the top UMC scorers with 10 points in 29 minutes of play. As a team, the Golden Eagles made nine three-pointers for the second highest game total of the season and dished out a season-high 19 assists. The Huskies were led by Taylor Witt who scored 24 points to lead all players. He was 9-13 from the field, 2-3 from long range and 4-4 from the free-throw line. Witt also dished out a game-high nine assists. Spencer Bartz finished with 21 points on 8-11 shooting and Craig Coenen closed out the top SCSU players with 10 points. The University of Minnesota, Crookston is 4-21 overall and 2-16 in NSIC play. St. Cloud improves to 17-8 overall and 12-5 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles travel to Bismarck, N.D. on Wednesday, February 25 to take on the Marauders from the University of Mary.
